Faro is a busy, industrial town, with an important harbor, marina, international airport, and a core of very modern buildings. But the antique center is also alive and a great reminder of human-scale cities across Europe.

Pera hosts a Sand Sculpture Festival every year. This small town in South Central Portugal put itself on the map with this yearly display of collossal sculptures created by professional and amateur artists. The year we visited, the theme was "Hollywood."

Albufiera is a beach town, wonderfully human scale. The center is festive and a walkable tunnel leads down to expansive beaches overseen by cliff-sized hotels. Food and music were everywhere.

The School For Navigators, near Sagres, Portugal, is where Henry the Navigator instructed Portuguese adventurers in the art and science of voyaging into the unknown.
